Print to File

Printing sophisticated documents, forms, outlines, tests, etc. on two different printers can produce different results. If your print at the college using a high-end printer and then try to print the document at home with a low-end printer, the printouts may be very different. There is a way to resolve this issue by printing to a file. Printing a document to a file instead of to your printer saves the document to a specific printer's properties.

Important: When you print to a file, you must first determine which printer will ultimately print the file.

Click File / Select Print
In the Name box, select the printer
(If you are working in your office double click Add Printer to locate the make/model of your home printer.
Follow the instructions of the Wizard)
Select the Print to file check box, and then click Print

Type in a file name ... notice the extension is .prn format
Select a drive and folder / OK

You can also save the document to diskette or USB key.
When you print from home, use the print to file copy you have saved.

The images were copied from Windows XP; however, if you are using an earlier version, there will be a slight difference in look. The procedure is the same.
